Lithium-ion cells - the trigger for the electric revolution
Advances in lithium–ion cell technology have been a major catalyst for the electric revolution on the road and in the air. Originally developed for video cameras, cell phones and laptops, it was the ingenious idea of Tesla founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning to connect a large number of these cells together to form a battery in order to develop the first electric car with a lithium-ion traction battery.
The presentation of the first Tesla model in 2008 – the Tesla Roadster – triggered a wave of research projects and start-ups in the field of lithium-ion technology worldwide. Even experts find it difficult to keep up to date.
